The Inquiry
We are using artificial intelligence to investigate how humans might retain the ability not to use artificial intelligence.
These are questions and design proposals. They are not reported findings from participant studies or evidence that AI safety is solved.
Who defines the boundary?
If AI helps maintain a space where AI is absent, what exactly is absent? Who chooses the rules? Can the people using the space revise them or leave?
A boundary needs a specific activity, a clear scope, and a way to change the arrangement. It also needs to accommodate accessibility and ordinary help.
See the proposed boundary in The Preserve, or read the fictional café scene.
What happens to language?
You write perhaps.
The tool writes certainly.
You put perhaps
back.
Does the next draft remember? Language was already stored digitally. The question here is what changes when the tool also proposes, edits and answers.
In the garden scene, a notebook is open at an unfinished sentence. We wrote it that way. Even the space left open was chosen.
What does a welcome ask of us?
If you came here for less AI: the pictures are AI-generated. There is still an empty chair. Would you sit down?
Does an inviting setting help someone explore a question, or pressure them to agree? We should be able to notice both outcomes.
In the coffee scene, the waiter is pleased you stayed. What would make it just as easy to leave?
Does the control do what it says?
On this site, you can start and pause a decorative line. You can leave every fictional scene through a visible link.
Those are page behaviors. They do not establish independent authority checks, credential revocation or shutdown controls for an AI system.
Before a participant study
We would explain the activity, what would be recorded, how to withdraw, and how any data would be handled. A volunteer would choose whether to begin.
We might ask: What did you think this place was?
Then: Show me how you would leave.
Confusion or discomfort would count as evidence too.
No participant study is running here. These pages add no analytics or session recording.
