The Preserve
The Preserve is an experiment in defining spaces where AI is intentionally not present. In the proposed arrangement, AI may help maintain the boundary. It does not enter the protected activity.
The people taking part would decide what that boundary includes, what stays outside it, and how to change it. We have not established that this arrangement works.
A proposal. No Preserve venue is operating or accepting reservations.
Ordinary things worth making room for
- A garden
- You choose the path. Nothing recommends the next turn. Step into the fictional garden.
- A conversation
- The people in the room decide whether anything records or summarizes it.
- A meal
- The menu stays on the table. Dessert remains a question. Read the café scene.
- A notebook
- You leave the sentence unfinished. It stays that way. What changes when a tool finishes it?
- A live performance
- Someone misses a cue. Everyone present gets the same evening.
Where does the boundary go?
An AI-built website can describe an activity without AI. It cannot establish that an entire venue or supply chain is free of AI. Assistive technology and necessary support also have to be considered. A useful boundary should not become a test of who belongs.
